Armor Trim Locations — All 18 Patterns and Where They Come From

Every armor trim template in the game, its source, and the structure you farm it from. Cross-checked against public wiki data. Updated November 04, 2026.

Read this first: templates are consumed when you trim armor, so the meta-skill is duplication - once you own one copy of a pattern (except Tide), 7 diamonds and a themed block make more. The smithing guide covers the flow.
Where armor trim templates come from, grouped by structure
Six structural families cover all 18 trims - chests, brushing, vaults and one guardian drop.

How the six source families behave

Overworld chests (Coast in shipwrecks, Dune in desert pyramids, Eye in the stronghold altar, Sentry in pillager outposts, Vex in woodland mansions, Wild in jungle temples) are the farming backbone - each structure seeds its loot table into the world, and exploration routes that cross several structure types per hour collect templates as a byproduct of playing. Deep dark chests hold Ward and the standout-rare Silence; ancient cities are dangerous enough that Silence doubles as a trophy. Nether chests carry Rib in fortresses and Snout in bastion hoglin stables. End City ships hold Spire. Archaeology is the different family: the four trail-ruins trims (Host, Raiser, Shaper, Wayfinder) come from brushing suspicious blocks - slow, single-use, the only trims where farming means digging many sites instead of looting one chest type. Trial chambers (1.21) keep Bolt in regular vaults and Flow in ominous vaults, the only trims gated behind the trial system. And Tide stands alone: it drops from elder guardians, which also makes it the one template that cannot be duplicated - each extra Tide costs another guardian fight.

Farming order for a new world

Eye comes first for almost everyone - the stronghold altar template is on the critical path to the End anyway. Coast and Dune follow from the gentlest exploration routes (any coastline or desert sweep). Sentry and Wild arrive with outpost and jungle trips; Vex waits for the mansion, which is its own expedition. The archaeology quartet fills in as trail-ruins digging fits the route. Nether trims ride fortress and bastion runs you were making for other reasons, Spire lands with End gear, and the trial pair is a 1.21 progression goal rather than a farm target. Once duplication starts, the specific template stops mattering and the 7-diamonds-per-copy budget takes over - plan the full-set trim around that number, not around luck.

Frequently asked questions

How many armor trims are there?

18: sixteen from the 1.20 Trails & Tales update plus Bolt and Flow from 1.21 Tricky Trials. Ten trim materials color each pattern, for 180 pattern-material combinations.

Which trim is the rarest?

Silence is the standout rare chest find in Ancient Cities, and Tide is structurally unique - it drops from elder guardians instead of appearing in chests, and it cannot be duplicated.

Where do the four archaeology trims come from?

Host, Raiser, Shaper and Wayfinder come from brushing suspicious gravel and sand at Trail Ruins. Suspicious blocks are single-use, so expect a few brushes per template.
